Getting noticed at Interop has become virtually impossible without a herd of moonwalking purple elephants or lighting your booth on fire. Many smaller vendors find themselves stuck in a remote parking lot or outbuilding away from the heart of the action. And we exhibitors are increasingly concerned about the expanding length of the show, which means we must pay to keep sales organizations on the convention floor longer. With this trend, I fear our most serious money losses won’t be at the blackjack tables.

Where Is AI in the Auto Industry Now and Where Is It Headed?
The shape-shifting, artificial intelligence-powered cars seen in futuristic films aren’t appearing anytime soon but AI technology certainly exists today in the auto market and will be increasingly visible in the future. Industry observers are saying that AI and machine learning have reached a tipping point and will cause enormous advances through the next few years in many markets. In the automotive sector, these technologies will be transformative. Analysis firm IHS Markit predicted that the installation rate of AI-based systems in new vehicles would rise by 109% in 2025, compared to just 8% in 2015, with most now focused on speech recognition.
Blockchain Technology Could Reinvent the Auto Industry
Breakthrough technology often makes its way slowly into cautious industries, the automotive sector being an example. This is unfortunate because organizations that more quickly adopt new paradigms can often benefit the most from them. In the case of blockchain technology, a sizzling new exemplar for making verified, authentic transactions digitally instead of physically, the auto industry with its massive supply chains has much to gain. Unfortunately, this technology is nowhere on the current horizon for automotive OEMs.
What Are the Most “Natural” User Interfaces?
The keyboard, the mouse, ubiquitous touchscreens and now voice recognition — the march goes on for a user interface that is intuitive, compelling and gets the job done. And it helps if the interface isn’t expensive or take up lots of space on the various electronics and gadgets we use every day. Touchscreens are so ubiquitous that some device makers are building them into their new products but they often forget that touchscreen software needs continual updates — by the user or an expensive tech staff — to work optimally. Consider the common frustrations when trying to use an out-of-date touchscreen in a kiosk at an airport, store or other public place and the problem becomes real.

How Two Schools a Continent Apart Bridge the Global Divisions with Virtual Music-Making
At a time when the world is in turmoil, with conflict saturating the news every day and people are afraid to reach out, we decided to take a group of teenagers 5,500 miles apart and bring them together to show how music can transcend the strife and anger in this world. From Los Angeles to Sweden and back, 24 of our kids got to play a music concert without ever having met and perform in front of a live audience in West Lake Village near Los Angeles. It was an ambitious undertaking but that’s exactly what we achieved this year at our small school in California.
